How Often Should You Service Your Air Conditioner?

October 16, 2026 · by xeonadmin

It’s one of the most overlooked parts of owning an air conditioning system — and one of the cheapest ways to avoid an expensive repair bill.

The short answer

Once a year for a typical residential system. Twice a year if it’s a commercial system, or a residential system that runs most of the day (think home offices, granny flats used as a bedroom year-round, or anyone running their system almost constantly through summer).

What actually happens during a service

A proper service isn’t just a quick filter wipe. It covers a filter clean or replace, an indoor and outdoor coil clean, a refrigerant and gas pressure check, a drainage check to prevent leaks, an electrical and component check, and a full performance test to confirm the system is cooling or heating as it should.

Why it’s worth doing

A system running on a dirty filter or a low refrigerant charge works harder for a worse result — that shows up directly on your power bill. Regular servicing also catches small issues (a failing capacitor, a blocked drain) before they turn into a breakdown, and keeps you compliant with the manufacturer’s warranty terms, which often require proof of regular servicing.
